Why ankles swell during the day
Your veins have to move blood uphill against gravity, and they rely on one-way valves plus the squeeze of your calf muscles to do it. When you stay still — a desk, a checkout, a plane seat — the calf pump goes quiet and pressure builds in the veins of the lower leg. Fluid is forced out through the vessel walls into the surrounding tissue. That is oedema, and gravity means it collects at the lowest point: your ankles and feet.
It usually gets worse through the day, is better in the morning after a night lying flat, and gets noticeably worse in hot weather because heat dilates blood vessels.
How graduated compression stops it building
A TrueFit sock applies about 20–30 mmHg at the ankle, easing to 12–16 mmHg at the calf. That external pressure counteracts the pressure inside the vein, so less fluid escapes into the tissue in the first place, and the gradient encourages what is already there to move upward. Crucially, this is preventive: it works best when you put the socks on in the morning before swelling begins.
Things that help alongside compression
- Elevate your feet above hip level for 15 minutes in the evening.
- Break up long sitting with a two-minute walk every hour.
- Do 20 ankle pumps (point and flex) whenever you're stuck in a seat.
- Cut back on very salty food — sodium makes the body hold water.
- Stay hydrated; dehydration makes fluid retention worse, not better.
When swelling needs a doctor, not a sock
Compression is for everyday, both-sides, end-of-day swelling. Get medical advice first if your swelling is sudden, in one leg only, painful, hot or red, comes with breathlessness or chest pain, or if you have heart, kidney or liver disease, peripheral arterial disease or diabetes with neuropathy. See our notes on compression socks and diabetes.
Why the wide strap matters here especially
If your legs already swell, a narrow elastic band is the worst possible finish on a sock — it bites into tissue that is already under pressure and can leave a deep indent. TrueFit's wide comfort strap spreads its hold across a broader band of the calf, which is why customers who swell tell us it is the first pair that does not leave a mark.
